TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – Police say the Marine suspected in a shooting rampage that zigzagged across the western part of Texas, and left one woman dead, is believed to have killed his wife in North Carolina before heading west.
The body of Rubi Estefania Smith was found Sunday afternoon in a motel near the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base. Investigators believe Rubi Smith died from a knife wound. The woman was the wife of Esteban J. Smith, who was killed that same day in a gunfight with a Texas Highway Patrol trooper and a state game warden.
The Texas shootings began about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, when suspect Smith allegedly shot a female motorist in the Eden area of Concho County, about 210 miles southwest of Dallas. The woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds.
